Scholar Spotlight: Talaia R.

Talaia has been in the HYPE family since 2020. She is a former HYPE scholarship recipient and is starting her junior year of college majoring in cybersecurity.

We recently asked Talaia some questions to get to know her better. Here’s what she had to say:

What is your favorite part about being involved in HYPE?

My favorite part about being involved with HYPE is the new connections and opportunities that are brought forth to me. Having the support and people who want to see me succeed and grow is something I am forever grateful for.

What’s something that you’ve learned since joining HYPE?

I have learned that representation in technology for women of color is severely limited, despite girls showing interest and great capability in science and math classes from a young age. Sadly, they aren’t encouraged as much as their male counterparts to pursue these interests. The lack of community and relatability in such a male-dominated field can be lonely and intimidating. Fortunately, HYPE is helping break down those barriers.

What would you say to encourage other girls to participate in programs like HYPE?

HYPE is transformative and a great opportunity to take part in. You never know unless you try! Give it a chance and see how much it will impact you! I joined in my junior year of high school and still feel the amazing benefits of the program as a rising junior in college!
